Company stresses disabled athletes' value This is it! I've been talking to my friends about this very topic. People with disabilities, the untapped market. It makes complete sense to get corporate sponsorship for disabled athletes. With the success of the Salt Lake City paralympic games, one can only imagine the possibilities corporate sponsorship could bring. If big business decides to go ahead with Scot Hollenbeck's plan, this could set up a chain of events. First, sports for disabled athletes would benefit. Second, being that people tend to buy products from companies that sponsor these kinds of activities, just think of the increase in sales that would take place if major companies joined in. Third, people with disabilities enjoy wearing designer clothing, eating out at popular restaurants and doing just about anything that nondisabled consumers do. It only stands to reason that targeting disabled consumers could absolutely boost sales of many different companies. What better time than now. Let's face it, at a time when stocks are down and business is hurting fresh ideas are needed to spark the economy. And what could be better public relations than to include a group that has been pretty much left out of the loop for too long. If you sponsor it, people will come. I believe Scot Hollenbeck is on the right track. Maybe the disabled community could get involved by sending letters to major companies to let them know about what Scot Hollenbeck is doing. What do all of you think? Email us at cpaul@ChooseAbility.com--maybe we can pass our ideas on to Vie Sports Marketing. (This Story was posted on ChooseAbility on July 29th, 2002)

Reporters Find New Outlet, and Concerns, in Web Logs You see, Brian? All these journalists are writing weblogs (blogs) for the publications they write for, as well as for themselves. You're a natural journalist. Believe me. There are many who would benefit from hearing what you have to say. I say, go for it!

oBBC NEWS | Americas | Ex-astronaut escapes assault charge I'm not sure why, but this story just cracked me up. I know some people who think all the Moon missions were faked. It just seems like it was a natural reaction by Buzz Aldrin.

I watched the show, "Like it is", hosted by Gil Noble this past Sunday. One of the journalism students was talking about people being quick to look for heroes in the wake of all the events that changed our lives on September 11th, 2001. I'm not sure what this person saw as the problem with looking for heroes, but I think it's a natural response to such a horrific event. It just so happens that we didn't have to wait very long to find heroes. A few people took matters into their own hands and overtook the terrorists who hijacked Flight 93, headed for Washington. The fear I was feeling turned to feelings of wanting to fight back--feelings of hope. I'm grateful for their heroics. It was the kind of inspiration we all needed in one of the most dreaded days in American history. It was said that New York stopped for a day in order to sort things out. I remember feeling like I was in a trance and the news of what the people did on Flight 93 helped me to overcome my fears. Thank God for heroes. May we all learn from their example.

Today was a day of remembrance for all those who lost their lives when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked by jets hijacked by terrorists. Due to the heroics of a group of people on flight 93, a third jet crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, thwarting a scenario that may have caused further panic had they been able to crash into the White House (probably their next destination). These horrific events played out in my head as I watched the news reports on different channels all day. What struck me was the way President Bush spent time with many of the victims' families--longer than expected. I must say it was really nice to see. It was the least presidential thing he'll ever have to do as President, but will probably go down in history as George W. Bush being at his best. My prayers go out to the families and friends directly affected by the attacks and all who witnessed the attacks first hand (and at home or work). May God Bless Us All.

The Nando Times: DAN K. THOMASSON: Fighting fire with sanity Another important issue that I believe needs much more attention, other than helping to change attitudes toward, and by, people with disabilities (which is close to my heart), is the environment. The lack of urgency and intelligence (by bureaucrats) is infuriating and it's time for people to stand up and demand that delays cannot be tolerated when it comes to taking measures preventing environmental erosion.

Boston Globe Online / Metro | Region / Town criticized for neglecting disabled It seems like Massachussetts is having all kinds of problems with servicing the disabled community. Does anyone have any personal experiences to relate? I would love to publish them on ChooseAbility. Let me know. Paul.
